Construction of post office at 16 S Main St

Town Square

In the early days of Waynesville, the intersecting streets of Main and Cross (now where Main Street meets East Street and Church Street) formed the town square. As the administrative center of Haywood County, Waynesville placed the original courthouse close to that intersection. In 1916 construction of the new post office (at 16 S Main St) began on that corner. To the left of the construction is the Waynesville Hotel.

The Texaco garage took advantage of this important crossroads as well. On the site of the present-day Waynesville Police Department (at 9 S Main St), the garage offered car parts, tires, tune-ups, and gas. It was one of several service stations on Main Street.
